Police in Istanbul killed a woman armed with grenades Wednesday, in the city's second day of violence.

"The Istanbul police headquarters on Vatan street was targeted by rifle fire and a female terrorist was killed in the clash," the Istanbul governor's office said in a statement.

At least two unidentified attackers were involved in the incident. One local photo showed a woman's body in the street, blood seeping from her coat and a rifle strapped across her chest. She was also armed with two hand grenades and a pistol.

An injured male accomplice to the woman reportedly ran away. Police later arrested him.

At least one officer suffered minor injuries from the shootout.

Following the attack, police blocked off the road in front of the headquarters building while a bomb disposal unit searched the scene.

Officials did not immediately say who was behind the attack.
