Deadly accident: falling plywood debris kills woman walking along street in Manhattan

A piece of flying construction debris killed a 37-year-old woman in New York City Tuesday (March 17, 2015) as she was walking along West 12th Street in Manhattan while speaking on her cellphone.

Strong winds loosened a 4X8 foot piece of plywood fencing from a construction site across the street and it was hurled across the street by the wind.

Ms. Trang-Thuy Nguyen was hit by the flying plywood and slammed into the wall of a nearby parking garage.

The force of the impact pushed the victim against the wall and she then hit her head on a metal fire department standpipe, causing a fatal injury. She was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital shortly after 6 pm on Tuesday.

The National weather service said winds in the area at the time of the accident were nearly 40 mph. Authorities say they will investigate the fatal accident.
