California train crash: Safety technology on new Metrolink passenger cars likely saved lives
  • 9 years ago
Safety technology on passenger cars used by Metrolink since 2010 likely reduced casualties and saved lives in Tuesday's commuter train accident in Southern California.

The Los Angeles-bound commuter train derailed early Tuesday morning after it rammed into a tractor trailer that had stopped on the tracks in Oxnard, California, injuring at least 28 people, including four critically.

Metrolink's new cars have energy-absorbing zones in the front and rear of each cab. Pushback couplers and crushable compartments in these zones absorb and deflect energy away from passengers.

The pushback coupler pushes back against an oncoming car. The crushable compartment then collapses, dissipating additional energy.

Additional safety features on the new cars include elevated train engineer compartments, illuminated pathways and exits and emergency pull-away windows.

Metrolink spent $263 million on 137 new passenger cars built by South Korean company Hyundai Rotem after a similar accident in Glendale in 2005 killed 11 people and injured 180 others.
