Coast Guard stages dramatic rescue of Aussie father and son trapped on boat in Atlantic blizzard

An Australian father and his son were rescued by the United States Coast Guard after they experienced an equipment failure on their boat in the Atlantic Ocean during a snowstorm on Sunday.

Reg McGlashan and his son Jason were planning to sail in their 13-metre boat from Narragansett Bay off Rhode Island, through Bermuda and around South Africa to their home in Port Macquarie, Australia, according to the Newport Daily News.

"We've never done anything like this. Dad's not even a sailor, but he's a quick study," Jason McGlashan told the Newport Daily News article. "We've got plenty of food, plenty of booze, good sails and all the safety gear you could ever need, so we're going to be OK."

However, the engine of their boat failed and a snowstorm ripped the sails at 4 a.m. on Sunday, forcing them to issue a distress call when they were about 240 km south of Nantucket, Massachusetts, NBC News reported. They were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard four hours later.

Reg McGlashan will fly back to Australia, according to NBC News, while his son said he wants to see if it's possible to salvage the boat, which is currently floating somewhere off the coast of Delaware.
