Police shoot teen girl: Denver cops shoot and kill 17-year-old for driving at them with a stolen car

On Monday morning, and for the fourth time in seven months, Denver police shot and killed a driver whom they accused of using a car as a deadly weapon.

Jessie Hernandez, 17, was pronounced dead at the hospital after she reportedly drove a stolen car at an officer, striking him in the leg and prompting two responding officers to open fire on her.

"They could have shot at the car," said Hernandez's friend Uriah Ramiraz during a Monday night vigil. "They didn't have to kill her."

Roughly 100 people gathered at the corner of East 26th Avenue and Newport Street Monday night to light candles for Hernandez and protest the Denver police system.

"There's no justification for murder," said Terrence Hughes, who spoke during the vigil.

According to an initial report sent out by the Denver Police Department, an officer was responding to complaints of a suspicious vehicle near East 25th Avenue and Newport Street around 6:30 Monday morning. The officer ran the vehicle's plates and found it had been reported stolen Sunday night.

The vehicle was described as a silver or gold Honda sedan. Additional information about the car and its owner was not immediately available.

Witnesses said five teenagers were in the car, and had been sitting in the alley for several hours. Hernandez was reportedly in the driver's seat.

The responding officer reportedly called for backup before approaching the sedan. When backup arrived, the two officers walked toward the car, and Hernandez drove at them, striking one of them in the leg.

According to the police statement: "The officers fired the weapons at the driver striking her. The driver was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead."

The two officers have been placed on administrative leave while officials investigate.

Police spokesperson Matt Murray told reporters the officers were simply "responding to the actions another person chose."
