League of Legends scholarships: Kentucky college to give out gaming scholarships

A small private liberal arts college in Kentucky is planning on making gaming an official sport and offering scholarships to gamers coming this fall.

The University of Pikeville will become the second school in the the country, behind Robert Morris University in Chicago, to offer scholarships to people that play the multiplayer online battle arena game League of Legends.

“It’s actually becoming a worldwide trend,” New Media Director Bruce Parsons said. “This game is five on five competitive play. It takes skill, practice and a lot of teamwork.”

"I think there are going to be a lot of students, both nationwide and international, who are going to look at our university who wouldn't have before," Parsons said.

The university plans to offer 20 scholarships to League of Legends players. The program will offer a strict training regime to hone the essential skills players need for the online battlefield.

E-athletes will have to maintain a certain GPA and will be treated like student athletes. They’ll have practice time and video time when they have to study other teams for upcoming tourneys.

Scholarship recipients will begin LOL competition play and also have scrimmages. The players will also compete in the Collegiate StarLeague.
