Missing AirAsia flight QZ8501: search moves underwater, Singapore provides locator beacon detectors

After debris and bodies retrieved from the Java Sea, the third day of search for the missing AirAsia Flight QZ8501 will move underwater.
For the third day of search, sonar equipment and submersibles will be deployed.
Singapore offered two sets of underwater locator beacon detectors to help find the missing plane’s black boxes, the International Business Times reported.
The detectors come with power microphone that can detect the “pings” emitted by a plane black boxes every second for 30 days. Singapore also offered two teams of specialists that can assist in the search efforts.
AirAsia plane disappeared in a stretch of the Java Sea that is only 130 to 164 feet deep versus the 13,000 feet depth where Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared.
Shallow waters however do not make the search easier, David Gallo, director of special projects at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, told NBC News.
If tidal currents are strong they can distort the pings making their detection more difficult.
What could make the search easier however is the fact that the Java Sea is close to land and surrounded by ports, which makes the potential crash sites more accessible for search teams and vehicles.
AirAsia Flight QZ8501, with 155 passengers on board, two pilots and five crew members, was supposed to arrive in Singapore from Surabaya at 8:30 a.m.
The pilot had asked for permission to climb from 32,000 feet to 38,000 feet to avoid bad weather but permission was not granted.
Most of the passengers are Indonesian. Three people on board are from South Korea, and one person each is from Singapore, Malaysia, Britain and France.
