Castle Doctrine? Jury finds Markus Kaarma guilty of murdering German exchange student

Montana man Markus Kaarma is facing 10 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of killing 17-year-old German exchange student Diren Dede.

Kaarma shot and killed the teen in his garage in April. He had argued a castle doctrine defense, saying deadly force was necessary to protect himself and his family.

But the jury didn’t buy it. Prosecutors argued Kaarma had lured intruders into his home with the intent of killing.

On the night of the shooting, Kaarma left his garage door partially open. A purse was set out as bait. When Dede and a friend entered the garage, motion alarms altered Kaarma to the teens’ presence.

Kaarma fire his shotgun four times into the garage, killing Dede while the other teen escaped unharmed.

Three witnesses said they heard Kaarma say he had been waiting up nights so he could shoot an intruder.
