Obama lets Ecuadorian criminal back into U.S. after hefty political donations

Estefania Isaias was banned from visiting her family in Miami after she was caught fraudulently obtaining visas for her Ecuadorian maids in 2011.

The Obama administration has overturned that ban, due in part to requests from Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey, who argued on Isaias’s behalf.

Menendez’s requests are likely linked to the complicated, money-driven relationship between the Isaias family and the U.S. government.

Estefania Isaias is the daughter of Roberto Isaias, an Ecuadorian banker living in Miami. Roberto Isaias and his brother, William, were head of Ecuador’s Filanbanco when it went bankrupt in 2001. They reportedly forged papers in order to profit from the buyout.

According to the Ecuadorian government, the buyout cost the country roughly $400 million. The Isaias brothers were sentenced to 8 years in prison for fraud.

But the brothers evaded prison time by moving to Miami, and the U.S. has refused to turn them over to Ecuadorian authorities. Around the same time the Ecuadorian bankers moved to Miami, they donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to democratic campaigns.

The family reportedly gave $100,000 to Obama’s 2012 campaign and roughly $30,000 to Sen. Bob Menendez.

When Estefania Isaias was banned from the U.S., Sen. Menendez wrote letters to the State Department in 2012, when Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State. Menendez requested the ban be overturned.

Estefania Isaias was allowed back into the U.S., and reportedly started work at an Obama fundraising firm called Balsera Communications.
