Failed hostage rescue by US Navy SEALs gets both hostages killed by Al Qaeda in Yemen

Two hostages being held by al-Qaeda militants in Yemen were killed during a U.S. military raid that failed on Friday, CNN reported a senior Defense Department official as saying on Saturday.
In the same report, a U.S. official said American photojournalist Luke Somers and South African Pierre Korkie, a teacher who was to be released on Sunday, were shot and killed in the compound by militants as the operation was taking place.
The relief group Gift of the Givers had hoped to secure Korkie's release soon, saying that they had recently told Korkie’s wife that he would be home for Christmas.
U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said President Barack Obama ordered the mission because "there were compelling reasons to believe Mr. Somers' life was in imminent danger.”
Meanwhile, CNN's Elise Labott reported that a senior State Department official said it was assessed that there were two individuals at the location but the White House did not know one was South African or that negotiations were taking place for his release.
A team of three dozen U.S. Navy SEALs landed roughly 10 kilometres from a compound where al-Qaeda militants were keeping hostages on Friday. The team was transported on two V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft.
Their element of surprise was lost when they were roughly 100 metres from the compound, possibly due to a barking dog, according to a report by RT News. A firefight ensued between militants and Navy SEALs when one militant reportedly exited the compound through a back door and killed the two hostages the gunmen were holding.
The hostages were recovered and transported to a ship waiting offshore, but neither survived.
