Spy cameras: how hackers turn your security cameras into live feeds anyone can see
  • 9 years ago
Thousands and thousands of videos from IP cameras around the world are being streamed online by a website called Insecam, which claims it exists merely to show people the importance of security settings.

The site features streaming live feeds from IP cameras that have passwords that weren’t changed from their default settings, the site claims. A menu on the side of the screen breaks down the feeds according to different countries, while tabs at the top categorize the footage according to various brands of video cameras.

According to a disclaimer on its main page, all people need to do is change their camera passwords to take their currently public cameras private.

However, Jay Leiderman, a U.S. lawyer wuith experience in hacking cases, told a reporter at Motherboard that the site is definitely in violationg of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA).

The IP address of Insecam shows it is being hosted in Moscow, Russia.
