Yehudah Glick shooting: Israeli police shoot dead Palestinian suspect in attempted assassination
  • 9 years ago
A U.S.-born rabbi who advocates for greater Jewish access to the Temple Mount complex, was shot on Wednesday night.

Controversial Jewish activist Yehuda Glick left the Menachem Begin Heritage Center with politician Moshe Feiglin after giving a presentation, the Jerusalem Post reported.

According to Feiglin, Glick was loading some posters into the back of his vehicle when a man on a motorcycle drove by and asked the rabbi whether he was Glick. After he said affirmatively, the man shot him multiple times.

The shooting sparked a manhunt for the assailant. Israeli police surrounded a three-storey house in the Abu Tor neighborhood. When counter-terrorism forces reached the rooftop, the suspect fired on them. The policemen fired back, killing the suspect on spot.

The gunman was later identified as Moataz Hejazi. Glick suffered four gunshot wounds but is now in stable condition.

Access to the Temple Mount has brought constant tension between Israelis and Palestinians, as the complex is a sacred site to Jews and Muslims.

Glick believes Jewish people have the right to pray at the site and is a fervent critic of the Israeli government’s policy of not allowing Jewish people free access to the Temple Mount.

Entry to the complex is currently banned for both Jews and Muslims.
