Mexico: Agricultural day laborers organize for improved conditions

Protests and strikes by poorly paid peasant farmers and agricultural day laborers in the San Quintin Valley in the northwestern Mexican state of Baja California have attracted the attention and support of public opinion nationally and internationally. They say their pay and living and working conditions are akin to modern day slavery. Peasant organizations charge that agribusiness misleads migrant workers with false promises of decent pay and working conditions and that authorities are in cahoots with these multinationals.
