Dolch sight words are a list of 220 "service words" compiled by Edward Dolch. The idea is that children need to recognize these words in order to achieve reading fluency. Many of the words can not be sounded out, so they must be learned by sight. About 50-75% of all the words used in most schoolbooks, newspapers and magazines are part of that list so learning to recognize and read these words is essential to becoming a good reader.
