An Advanced Placement government and civics teacher is being credited with possibly preventing a high school shooting after tackling an armed student early Monday morning, according to local reports.

Police received reports of an active shooter, described by students as wielding a Magnum, at North Thurston High school early Monday morning.

The suspect, a 16-year-old student, reportedly fired a shot into the ceiling in one of the school's hallways.

Just before 7:30 a.m. the teen entered the Lacey, Washington school's common area and fired a second round into the ceiling.

"We thought it was fake for a second. Then he shot off another round," 16-year-old student Anthony Rybalkin told Komo News. "Everyone just started running out the back door."

Teacher Brady Olson next tackled the student and with the help of another staff member was able to hold him down until authorities arrived.

Police say that nobody was injured by the gunfire and that the unidentified gunman is now in custody.

Olson is being hailed a hero for his part in preventing what could well have been a terrible tragedy.
