Mexico radioactive material: Stolen radioactive container found under a bridge

A radioactive container stolen several days ago from the Mexican city of Cardenas was found abandoned under a bridge on Wednesday.

The container, containing radioactive Iridium-192 capsules, was stolen on April 13 from a radiology company truck parked in a residential area in Cardenas. The thieves then fled in another vehicle.

The theft triggered an alert in five states. Mexico’s civil protection agency told the BBC that the contents of the container are “very dangerous” if removed. Some 100 federal forces were deployed to recover the container when someone notified the police after finding the container under a bridge linking Cardenas with Villahermosa, the capital of Tabasco County.

Christian Romera, the deputy director for radiological emergencies at Mexico’s National Nuclear Energy Commission, told Agence France-Presse that there were no signs that the container had been opened.

This is the fourth time in the last two years that radioactive material has been stolen in Mexico.
