Child abuse: Rare skin condition causes parents to be confronted by armed police - TomoNews

Reginald, age 40, and Valerie Jackson, age 35, are parents to 4 children and were also suddenly surrounded by five armed police officers while shopping at their local Wal-Mart.

Why you might ask? Because someone called the police and reported the Jacksons for child abuse, since their youngest child, 5 year old RJ, has a rare skin condition.

RJ suffers from Netherton’s syndrome, which is a rare strain of the skin condition ichthyosis, and is only one of 70 known sufferers in the world.

Netherton’s syndrome makes RJ’s skin red and itchy, often dry and cracked, so the Jackson’s have to slather the toddler with Vaseline every 2-3 hours. Valerie says she hasn’t slept a solid 8 hours for the past 5 years.

She also mentioned that the police were polite and merely asked her about her son’s skin condition, which she said she is always willing to explain.

Valerie says she’s become used to the comments and snide remarks made about her son, often by other adults, but this last stunt just goes to show the level of ignorance of the caller. Instead of walking up and asking, they leaped to the conclusion that Valerie had scalded or burned her son, unfortunately, not an uncommon conclusion.

It’s a kind of public vigilantism that is more and more common nowadays, where it’s easier to call the police than to speak to or help a stranger.
