A Spanish teenager armed with a crossbow killed a teacher and injured four others at a school in Barcelona on Monday, the 16th anniversary of the Columbine high school attack in Colorado, police said.

Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that the 13-year-old boy had a crossbow made from ballpoint pens, a knife, a BB gun and a backpack with material that could be used to make a molotov cocktail.

A student at the school said he had seen the attacker with a knife.

"The boy came into our class with a knife and wanted to attack a friend of mine. But he didn't manage to, he left, and we had a chance to run away," the student, a minor, told Reuters TV.

The suspect, who has not been identified because of his age, knocked on the door of a classroom at at the Joan Fuster school in Barcelona around 9:20 a.m. and shot a teacher at point-blank range when she opened the door. He then wounded a student, the teacher's daughter, in the same classroom.

The suspect then killed a substitute teacher who tried to intervene. The teacher had only been at the school for two weeks.

Another student and another teacher were also injured in the attack.

The incident occurred on the anniversary of the 1999 Columbine high school attack in Colorado in which 12 students died.

According to Reuters, under Spanish law, minors under the age of 14 cannot be formally arrested or criminally tried.
