US Ebola: First case of deadly disease in US found in Dallas, Texas, in man who arrived from Liberia

A patient being treated at a Dallas hospital is the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Officials have not released the identity of the man, who left Liberia on September 19 and arrived in the United States on Sept. 20, according to Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC.

The man did not feel ill at that time, but began to show symptoms about four or five days later, Frieden said. He was hospitalized and isolated on Sunday at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital.

Frieden said a CDC team will investigate the people the man has been in contact with and will observe them for up to 21 days, which is the generally the amount of time a person who has contracted the Ebola virus begins to show symptoms.

Meanwhile, the CDC is downplaying the risk of Ebola spreading to the general public, with Frieden saying there currently are no other suspected cases of Ebola in Texas.
