Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum accident: chemical flash injures 13, mostly children

A routine experiment at a science museum in Reno, Nevada went horribly wrong, causing a chemical flash that injured 13 people, mostly children.

Staffers at the Terry Lee Wells Discovery Museum were trying to create a “smoke tornado” to explain the formation of tornadoes to a group of children accompanied by some adults who were seated on the floor.

A faulty mixture of methyl alcohol and boric acid used in the experiment caused a chemical flash.

The victims suffered chemical burns on their hands, arms and faces. Their genders and ages were not publicized.

The museum building was not damaged in the mishap.
