A man was shot to death in southwest Albuquerque by a Bernalillo County deputy on August 4 after going on a rampage with his truck.

It started with a domestic fight at a gas station on the corner of Gun Club Road and Coors Boulevard, when Manuel Flores pulled up and began to beat a woman at the gas station, then forced her into his truck.

She managed to escape his truck, got back into her own car with her daughter and fled north on Coors Boulevard. Flores chased the woman’s silver sedan and rammed it off the road, totaling the car. The woman and her daughter escaped the wreck, but when they tried to flee on foot, Flores attempted to run them over.

Then, while Flores was doing a three-point turn in a parking lot, Bernalillo County deputy Sam Rodriguez arrived in his cruiser. Flores swiped the cruiser on the driver’s side door, jamming it shut. Then, he drove back and rammed the cruiser head on.

The impact left deputy Rodriguez completely trapped. Flores got out of his truck and raises his hands while yelling something at the deputy which cannot be discerned from the CCTV footage. But Rodriguez took decisive action and shot Flores, killing him on the spot.

While the Albuquerque PD has shot dozens of people in recent years, this was the first fatal shooting by a Bernalillo County deputy since 2012.
