Authorities are investigating an apparent murder-suicide in which a Virginia man fatally shot his wife and three daughters before turning the gun on himself.

Police believe the shootings occurred after Clarence Washington had a heated argument with his wife, Shauna Washington on Saturday night. Neighbors reported hearing loud noises, but did not inform police, USA Today reported.

Washington, 35, opened fire on his wife and daughters aged 13, six and four before fatally shooting himself, it is believed. Investigators have not yet established the sequence of the shootings.

Shauna Washington’s mother, accompanied by a relative, visited the Washington’s home on Sunday night after becoming worried when her daughter and grandchildren missed church. The mother discovered the bodies after entering the house via a window.

Shauna Washington’s cousin told the press that the couple had recently been
experiencing marital problems.

“This is definitely a shock to the community, for sure,” Mayor Michael Olinger said. “Very seldom do we have a murder in Culpeper or any kind of activity such as this.”

Family and friends said Clarence Washington was a quiet and hardworking man. Both parents had two jobs to support the family, neighbor Reggie Massie said in an interview with local television station WJLA.
