Peru Sends in Army to Control Copper Mine Protests

The Peruvian military has been deployed to quell protests over a proposed copper mine in which three people have died and more than 200 have been injured. President Ollanta Humala ordered the Army to the area for one month to control unrest. Demonstrators oppose Southern Copper Corporation’s US$1.4 billion Tia Maria project, which could add 120,000 tons of copper to the company’s output, but would pollute surrounding agricultural valleys and sources of water. teleSUR
