iPhone death: Teen jumps on car to stop thief but dies after falling off

Ruby Rubio, a 15-year-old high school student from California, died after jumping on the car of the thief who stole her iPhone.
The tragedy occurred around noon on July 3, near South Towner Street and West Warner Avenue in Santa Ana, California.
According to the Santa Ana Police Department, Ruby was walking her 7-year-old sister from school and was just blocks away from home when they were stopped by a crook who asked for the time.
When Ruby pulled out her phone to check, the suspect snatched it and jumped into a silver or grey Pontiac. Not wanting to lose her new phone, Ruby jumped onto the trunk of the thief's car as it sped away. She held onto the car's antenna briefly before it veered and shook her off.
The girl's mother Marisol Hernandez, 44, said her daughter opened her eyes in the hospital, looked at her for 5 seconds and said "Mom".
But tragically, Ruby didn't pull through, Suffering from severe head injuries, she died in hospital on July 5.
Hernandez said Ruby had her new iPhone for only a week; it was a gift for earning good grades in school. She also told Ruby to be careful, since she broke two other phones.
Ruby's new iPhone was later found near the scene. The thief, meanwhile, remains at large. Police say the suspect is an Hispanic male in his late 20s or 30s. He is 5-feet-10 inches tall and wore a black baseball cap, white tank top and light colored jeans.
Santa Ana police are seeking information on the case. Witnesses are asked to call 714-245-8390 or 1-855-TIP-OCCS.
