As football frenzy sweeps the world, fraud rings are also jumping on the bandwagon, following the scent of easy money.
A Taiwanese woman nicknamed Xiao-Ciao (小喬), from Taichung (台中), met a man, identified as Ren Tian-Jiang (任添強), on Facebook who claimed to be a football analyst based in Macau. Xiao-Ciao cyber-dated the man with marriage in the mind and kept in touch with him via phone calls and instant messages.
Early last month, Ren Tian-Jiang told Xiao-Ciao that he would capitalize on his knowledge by making bets on football to win money for her. The man collected Xiao-Ciao's personal data after persuading her to open an account.
Within days, Xiao-Ciao received a text congratulating her on winning a sum more than US$575,000 (NT$17,000,000) and asking her to transfer the tax of about US$30,000 (NT$890,000) before receiving the prize. Xiao-Ciao refused, but the man tried to convince her to take the money to Macau to collect her winnings. Xiao-Ciao saw the attempted scam for what it was and reported it to the police.
Police are urging the public to be aware of scams that are designed to swindle money and personal information.
