A Georgia family says a SWAT team raided the home they were sleeping in during the night and seriously injured their 19-month-old son after a stun grenade exploded in his face.

Alecia Phonesavanh said her child is at the Grady Memorial Hospital burn unit in a medically induced coma.

The Phonesavanh family were staying at their sister-in-law's house in Cornelia on Wednesday.

Police said deputies had bought drugs from the house and came back with a no-knock warrant to arrest a man known to have drugs and weapons.

Cornelia Police Chief Rick Darby confirmed that the raid took place just before 3am.

Upon entering the premises, the SWAT police threw a stun grenade that landed right in the child's playpen and exploded on the toddler's pillow right in his face.

Police arrested Wanis Thometheva during the raid. The Phonesavanh family have no insurance and have set up a fund to pay for the child's medical expenses.
