An Israeli company company has developed a handheld molecular sensor able to read and analyse the chemical composition of daily objects ranging from fruit to medicine.

SCiO is a device which uses near-IR spectroscopy. The technology is not new, but spectrometers are normally bulky machines used mainly in laboratories.

When the sensor radiates near-infrared light on a particular object, billions of photons are emitted and make their way into the object's molecules. As molecules vibrate in unique ways, when a photon with matching energy hits a molecule, it will disappear. By analysing the disappeared photons, the mini spectrometer can deduce the chemical configuration of objects.

After a scan, SCiO will send the information to a database, and the result is then transmitted to the user's smartphone in real time.

The device has a wealth of potential uses, including detecting hydration levels in plants and checking for substances such as 'date rape' pills in a drink.

The scanner cannot be used on metal objects. The developers said that the sensor will be more useful as time passes as the developer is still building a database of object.
