Dozens of people died on Monday (March 24) and many more were injured after a bus plunged off a mountain road in Thailand's western Tak province, according to an AFP report.

The bus, which was carrying Thai local government workers and elderly people, was the last vehicle in a four-bus convoy bound for Ubon Ratchathani province and Laos.

The bus was reportedly driving downhill as the driver attempted to pass by other vehicles along a steep, winding mountain road. The brakes stopped working and the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The bus broke through a concrete barrier, slid off the mountain road and flipped several times before crashing into a tree, according to a Bangkok Post report.

At least 30 bodies were recovered from the wreckage. More than 20 people were injured.

"The bus was totally destroyed," said Tak governor Suriya Prasartbandid, according to the AFP report. "Its engine fell out and we're waiting for heavy machinery to lift the wreckage."

The same road saw more than 300 accidents last year, according to AFP.

Thailand's roads are considered among the deadliest in the world. According to a recent report by the World Health Organization, Thailand saw 38.1 road deaths per 100,000 people in 2010, behind only the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean and the South Pacific island of Niue.
