Three Chinese ships sailed into disputed waters near Japanese-controlled islands in the East China sea, known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China, on Monday morning (February 17).

The incursion was reported in an area where Japanese and Chinese territorial waters overlap in the East China Sea, off the coast of one of the islands, which were purchased and acquired by the Japanese government in September 2012.

Three Chinese coast guard ships entered into the 12-nautical-mile territorial waters off one of the Senkakus at around 10 a.m., Japan's coast guard said.

According to Kyodo, the Japan Coast Guard warned the three ships not to intrude into Japanese territorial waters. One of the ships, responding both in Japanese and Chinese, said that the islets are the "inherent territory of China," the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture said.

This is the first time China entered Japanese territorial waters since February 2.
