Stupid: 9/11 fire drill at Logan Airport freaks out travelers

The Massachusetts Port Authority has apologized for its decision to hold a fire training exercise at Boston's Logan Airport on September 11 this year, the 12th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page, Massport said it "understands that it may have offended many of those touched by the events of Sept. 11.

On Wednesday morning, Massport alerted the public of its planned training exercise. On Twitter, it said that "smoke on the airfield is part of the training."

Pictures posted by local news outlet WBZ-TV showed a training apparatus spewing flames and black smoke on the airfield.

However, some travelers were unaware of the exercise and were initially frightened by the spectacle.

Gov. Deval Patrick said later that day that Massport's decision to hold the training on
the anniversary of 9/11 was "just dumb."

The governor added, "People who experienced 9/11, many who work at Massport, I just feel so sorry."

The 9/11 terror attacks in 2001 began with the hijacking of two airplanes that had taken off from Logan Airport.
