Bomb kills eight soldiers in restive Thai south

Suspected Muslim rebels in Thailand's restive south killed eight soldiers in a roadside bomb attack early Saturday morning, according to Reuters.

A military truck was transporting ten Thai soldiers along a village road in Yala province at the time of the blast. The soldiers were returning from a night on duty at a military base. The blast by the 60-kilogram bomb was among the most deadly single attacks by rebels in recent years, according to an AFP report.

The attack took the lives of eight soldiers and injured two more as well as another two villagers. Resistance to Buddhist rule from Bangkok in the nation's predominantly Muslim southernmost provinces has existed for decades, but began resurfacing violently in early 2004.
