Since he was a young boy doodling on post-it-note flipbooks, Pendleton Ward knew he wanted to be an animator. Unlike many kids his age, he wasn’t interested in the popular Disney cartoons. Instead, he was drawn to the adult humor of The Simpsons, imaginative but terrible post-apocalyptic movies like Waterworld, and making up worlds and stories about orcs and flesh golems during D&D sessions.
Ward excelled during his time at CalArts, creating absurd characters like those in his webcomic, Bueno the Bear. After graduation, Eric Homan from Frederator Studios approached Ward to pitch an animated short. Ward showed up to the meeting with
