Peru: High-End Housing Boom Squeezing the Poor

A boom in high-end housing in Peru is making it increasingly difficult for low income families to obtain affordable housing. On the outskirts of Lima tens of thousands of families have occupied land and constructed makeshift housing. Authorities often use repression to evict the families. Meanwhile, construction companies control about 90% of land suitable for housing, with projects aimed at middle and high income clients. Commercial real estate developments and government housing programs fail to respond to the needs of poorer families, who are the majority of the country's population.
