This film tells the story of the modern coal miner. Through stories directly from the laborers, myths about miners and mining families are dispelled. One family featured in the film has consisted of miners for generations. Being a coal miner is a matter of pride in their life and work. A wife of a coal miner says in the film that most Americans believe miners are dirty and poor people. They own a nice home and vehicle and the father cares for his children and his own retired father. Others miners volunteer for coal mining safety education, become fire fighters, church goers, or family men. Also, mining safety and technology is stressed in the film. With new technology coming onto the mining scene, workers’ jobs are not as labor intensive and are becoming more skill oriented. This means that being a miner is much safer now and many extra safety precautions are taken. Miners’ wives still worry, but they know their husbands are safer than they would have been a generation ago. According to this movie, the modern coal miner works hard and looks out for his family and has a bright future ahead. They want the best for their children and families and are trying to improve for the future.
