ISIS reveals ‘Schweppes bomb’ photo, claims it downed Russian Metrojet

CAIRO — A photograph released in an ISIS propaganda magazine shows a can bomb, which is the same kind of bomb that supposedly took down Russian Metrojet 7K9268 over Egypt's Sinai Peninsula last month.

The photograph, published on Wednesday in the English-written extremist magazine Dabiq, also shows what explosive experts say are likely a blasting cap and an electric initiator that were used to activate the bomb.

Russian newspaper Kommersant, citing unnamed sources, reports that the soda can bomb was placed under a passenger seat in the plane's main cabin. All reports indicate that the 224 people on board had no knowledge of an explosive on board, but ABC News reports that according to the explosive experts they've spoken to, the bomb may have been detonated by someone on board.

The terrorist organization claims to have exploited a security loophole at Sharm El-Sheikh airport, which allowed the bomb to be smuggled aboard the plane. Egyptian authorities have arrested two airport workers for allegedly aiding the terrorists.

In December 2014, a terrorist propaganda magazine, Inspire, released a "how-to-bomb-a-plane" guide, offering instructions on building small hidden bombs with easily available materials. The article claims that only half a kilogram of explosive material would be enough for it to work effectively.

Russian officials claim that the improvised explosive device (IED) used to down the Russian Metrojet was probably filled with around 2.2 pounds of TNT.
