NEW YORK — One woman was killed and several other people injured by a speeding driver in Brooklyn on Thursday evening, Reuters reported.

According to the New York Daily News, a man in a white Mercedes Benz was driving at high speed when he fatally struck a 56-year-old woman trying to enter her car. She died later at Brookdale Hospital, CBS New York reported.

After trying to flee the accident scene, the driver sped away and crashed again into other vehicles and injured at least nine people, reported CBS New York. Next, he reportedly fled on foot into oncoming traffic where a witness said he was hit by a car, but got back up and kept on running.

Police told CBS New York that he attempted a carjacking as he tried to flee. According to Reuters, police soon caught and arrested the man and charges against him are pending.

Police are investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a part in the incident.
