Daily Beast goes back and forth on San Bernardino shooting suspect's photo

SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA — The Daily Beast made a blunder on Wednesday when it identified the wrong man as suspected gunman Syed Rizwan Farook following a deadly attack at a social services center.

Reporters at the news website jumped onto Facebook and found photos of a man named Syed Raheel Farook in San Bernardino and attached it to their story, claiming that he was the male shooter.

The Daily Beast then changed the picture to a stock photo of police officers standing by an SUV, only to change it back to the original photo they had up after a Wednesday night press conference where a man named Farhan Khan, who said he was a brother-in-law of the shooter, said he had known the suspect for much of his life and last saw him a week ago.
The Daily Beast then added a photo from Facebook that showed a photo of Farhan Khan and Syed Raheel Farook.

The only problem? The male suspect was named Syed Rizwan Farook.

The Daily Beast has since changed their photo back to the stock photo of the police officers and acknowledged the error, saying "the two Syed R. Farooks are apparently brothers".
Gunmen stormed into the social services center on Wednesday and opened fire, killing at least 14 people and injuring at least 17, which set off an intense manhunt that ended with a gunfight and the death of a male and female suspect, authorities said.

Authorities initially said the male suspect was named Syed Farook, but did not release a middle name.

Early Thursday morning, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan identified the male suspect as Syed Rizwan Farook, 28 and a female suspect as Tashfeen Malik, 27.
