Japanese space probe's second attempt to orbit Venus

TOKYO, JAPAN — The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, has announced the second try at putting their Akatsuki space probe into orbit around Venus on Monday, according to a JAXA press release.

JAXA used four thrusters starting at 8:51 a.m. to attitude-control the probe into an elliptical orbit of Venus, and JAXA professor Masato Nakamura, who is in charge of the Akatsuki program, said in a news conference that: "It is very much expected to enter the planned orbit." The thrust emission lasted about 20 minutes, but it will take a few days to estimate the orbit, at which time JAXA will confirm and announce the results of the operation. If successful, the probe will have two years to observe Venus, according to The Japan Times.

The Akatsuki space probe was launched in May of 2010, but the first attempt to place it in Venus's orbit in December 2010 failed, because of a problem with the main engine, and it was redirected to the sun's orbit, where it sustained high temperatures and radiation.

Although the nozzle of the main engine is damaged, Akatsuki still has six kinds of observation equipment that will be used to study the atmospheric phenomenon called super-rotation, which occurs on Venus as the atmosphere rotates faster than the planet itself, The Japan times reported.
