Peter Tobin has been found guilty of three murders.Many believe they could be the tip of the iceberg. I was the Producer/Director of this programme. It is a difficult story to tell, the time line takes so many twists and turns, and he repeatedly changes his name. We found great contributors and good actors to recreate some of the scenes that had been graphically described.
I couldn’t verify it for my new book but the sad reality is this number of victims is perfectly possible.
Tobin could have exaggerated for effect but it is possible he did murder 48 women because he was an organised and geographically mobile serial killer who murdered in one part of the country but would then flee to another.
By crossing police force boundaries like this, he made it difficult to link up a series of murders.
Tobin also hid the bodies of his victims – in his house, in the garden and even in a church, which again allowed him to put time and distance between him and his crimes.
I use the term “serial killer” – someone who kills three or more during a period longer than 30 days.
And after his conviction for the murders of Angelika Kluk, Vicky Hamilton and Dinah McNicol, that label is criminologically accurate.
It is an indisputable fact about a man who has changed names and drifted between jobs, regularly changing cars as he moved – someone about whom hard facts are hard to come by.
It is also an indisputable fact that he is a sexual sadist who clubbed Angelika about the head, then gagged her, bound her wrists and stabbed her 19 times, 16 times in the chest, before hiding her body at the church where he worked as an oddjob man.
This “overkill” clearly satisfied his perverse sexual pleasures and is probably part of his fantasy life now in prison in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.
There are other criminological questions we need to consider. Most obviously – when did he start to kill?
When he murdered Angelika Kluk in September 2006, Tobin was 60.
Murder, especially serial murder, is a young man’s business which usually begins when the killer is in his late teens to early twenties.
That suggests Tobin had been murdering for some 40 years.
