R.E.M. est un groupe de rock américain formé à l'automne 1979, et baptisé ainsi le 5 avril 1980 par Michael Stipe (chant), Peter Buck (guitare), Mike Mills (basse) et Bill Berry (batterie)
Le groupe devenu trio sort en 1998, et dans la douleur, Up suivi en 2001 de Reveal qui marque le retour à un succès massif pour le groupe grâce au single Imitation of life.
Plus qu'un groupe de rock, les membres de R.E.M. sont aujourd'hui des personnages engagés politiquement et humainement.
Breakthrough success: 1987-1993
For their fifth album, 1987's Document, the band began a decade-long relationship with producer Scott Litt. Reacting to the conservative political environment of the 1980s under President Ronald Reagan, the album featured some of Stipe's most openly political lyrics, particularly on "Welcome To the Occupation" and "Exhuming McCarthy".
Document was R.E.M.'s breakthrough album, and the first single "The One I Love" charted in the Top 20 in the US, UK, and Canada.The album's second single, "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)", was an apocalyptic rant reminiscent of Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues". While not nearly as big a success at mainstream radio it reached number 69 on the US singles chart.
