Orlando cop shoots 17-year-old fleeing traffic stop in stolen vehicle

ORLANDO, FLORIDA — Orlando police released two videos on Monday showing an incident earlier this month that quickly escalated from traffic stop to officer-involved shooting.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that shortly after midnight on Jan. 16, officers Jonathan Mills and James Hyland saw a white Dodge Challenger reversing into a parking lot. Noticing the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, they decided a traffic stop was in order, and parked their unmarked police car in front of the Challenger.

Officer Mills stepped out with his gun raised and repeatedly ordered the driver to stop. Instead of stopping, the driver attempted to flee, but was blocked by the arrival of another police car.

The cops then used batons on the Challenger's windows, trying to smash the windows while yelling, "Stop the car, put your hands up, do it now!"

At this point, the suspect vehicle backed all the way up, hitting a parked car behind it before hurtling forward.

Officer Mills, believing the driver was trying to run him over, fired four shots as the car made a sharp left turn and drove off.

Authorities later found the car after it crashed into an abandoned home, realizing later that it had been stolen from Orange County. The 17-year-old driver of the car, Trevon Lamons, took a bullet to the shoulder and was arrested for aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding, and grand theft auto.

Two other people who were in the stolen vehicle with him have not yet been caught.
