Angry mobs, meet the vortex ring gun
COLUMBUS, OHIO — Americans protest for and against gun control all the time, but sometimes protests can get slightly out of hand so why not employ a little "non-lethal" gun control to keep those angry mobs at bay?

Enter the vortex ring gun.

In March of 2012, Ohio research company Battelle filed a patent application for a device that shoots rings of gas. The gun can fire rings of air at speeds of at least sixty miles per hour over more than fifty yards.

The rings are produced by pushing gas at speed through the gun's cylinder. The gas in the doughnut-shaped rings is ionized, which would help particles inside the ring, such as tear gas or pepper spray, stick to the target.

Wired reports the technology could be used by riot police to fire tear gas into crowds and also by firefighters to clear rooms of smoke.
