At least 124 people are trapped beneath the debris of an apartment complex in Tainan, Taiwan, 39 hours after a massive earthquake hit the city, a high-ranking city official said Sunday evening.
She added that many may still be alive.
A magnitude-6.4 quake struck Tainan, a quiet city of 1.8 million, just before dawn Saturday.
The temblor killed at least 24 people, including 22 who died when a 17-story apartment complex collapsed.
At least 475 people were injured across the city, and 99 of them are still in hospital.
Chen Mei-Ling, the secretary general of Tainan City, told the Los Angeles Times that rescue workers have detected 124 people beneath the rubble of the Wei Guan apartment complex using infrared sensors, as well as metal detectors and fiberoptic cables.
