Two Maryland officers killed in Panera Bread shootout

ABINGDON, MARYLAND — Two sheriff's deputies were killed after a shootout with a man in Maryland late Wednesday morning, said Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler in a statement.
At 11:46 a.m., a Harford County sheriff's deputy responded to a call at a Panera Bread in Abingdon, Maryland, Gahler said in a statement posted to Facebook on the Harford County Sheriff's Office page.
While inside the Panera, Gahler said, the suspect, 67-year-old David Brian Evans, fired at the deputy, striking him in the head and then fled the restaurant. Evans had at least two outstanding warrants in two states, Gahler added.
Witnesses described him as a homeless and disheveled man. According to the Baltimore Sun, the suspect reportedly ran toward Park View apartments close to the shopping center in Box Hill South Parkway. The deputy tried to make contact with the suspect but was struck by gunfire, reported ABC-affiliate WMAR Baltimore, citing the sheriff's office.
Additional deputies arrived and fired at the suspect, said Gahler. Evans was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities suspect both officers may have been targeted because they were in uniform.
One of the injured deputies was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore while the other was taken to University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, reported the Baltimore Sun.
"It is with great sadness, that I tell you that both deputies shot earlier this morning have succumbed to their injuries," said Gahler. "One deputy was a 30-year veteran of this agency, and served in the court services division. The other deputy had served this agency for 16 years and was assigned to the community services division."
