Armed suspect shot dead after opening fire on South Carolina cops

CAYCE, SOUTH CAROLINA — Dashcam footage capturing the heart-stopping moments which lead to the fatal shooting of an armed suspect has been released by by South Carolina police.

The incident on Nov. 17 last year began when Sergeant Frank Ballentine of the Cayce Public Safety Department approached suspect Demetrius Bryant's car, WLTX reported.

The officer told Bryant, 21, he could smell marijuana in the car and asked him to step outside.

The footage shows Ballentine was then joined by Public Safety Officer Rhett Kelly after calling in Bryant's details and discovering he had not registered the car. The two officers searched Bryant and found marijuana in his pocket.

As the officers attempted to arrest Bryant, the suspect resisted before pulling out a gun from his back pocket and opening fire on the officers.

The officers returned fire and chased Bryant around the side of an apartment. Off-camera, more gunshots are heard.

Bryant was shot twice in the upper body and died of his injuries.

Officer Kelly was hit by a gunshot to the leg.

Both officers were cleared of any wrongdoing over the incident and have returned to work.
