'Damn, Daniel' fame leads to swatting call, guest appearance on Ellen

RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA — 15 seconds of Internet fame can come at a cost, something the Damn, Daniel video creators are quickly finding out.

After their video went viral with more than 45 million views in only a week, a number of odd occurrences have taken place. Several pairs of white Vans are being auctioned off as Daniel's, with one bid reaching $400,000. Daniel says he hasn't auctioned off his shoes, but people continue to bid.

Rumors also began this week claiming that Daniel was beaten up and robbed of his white Vans. This was also false, as Daniel is alive and well. But the Internet tends to freak out fast, with some Twitter users posting condolences with the hashtag #DamnPrayForDaniel.

On Tuesday at 1 a.m., Daniel's friend and cameraman, Josh Holz, was the victim of a swatting call. Someone called police using a voice modification device, claiming to have shot his mother from inside their house using an AK47. This too, was a false claim. The practice of "swatting" happens to celebrities on occasion, when prank calls are made to local authorities to investigate alleged emergencies at a target's residence.

The California high-schoolers, Daniel Lara, 14, and Josh Holz, 15, were invited as guests on the Ellen DeGeneres Show on Feb. 24. Josh was gifted a "Damn, Daniel" personalized surfboard by Ellen, and Daniel was awarded a lifetime supply of Vans sneakers, courtesy of Vans.
