JAH9 live @ MAIN STAGE 2014

The poet / singer Jah9 is a prominent new force on the Jamaican roots scene. Her real name is Janine Cunningham, born in 1983, after her first poetic experiments she firstly discovered the free jazz structure and later the vibes of dub and roots culture, carving her style into an evocative cross between genres, taking advantage of the freedom of both schemes. After a first mixtape and some singles, "New Name" was released in 2013, produced by Rory Gilligan of Stone Love. This much anticipated debut LP is one of the most interesting records to have emerged on the Jamaican roots scene in recent years: a great team of musicians including Donal "Bassie" Dennis, Dean Fraser, Nambo Robinson and Franklyn "Bubbler" Waul provide twelve strong roots compositions into which she moulds all the intensity of her poetry with lyrical communion and a truly impressive expressive manner.
