Original Charleston Strut – Stumptown Jazz 2002
This virtually unknown tune was originally recorded in the thirties and written by Clarence Williams but I only heard it on a German issued LP of the Chris Barber band. I liked it and together with the wonderful Stumptown Jazz from Portland Oregon we managed to learn it and we play it here at a performance of the Portland Dixieland Jazz Society.
Stumptown Jazz started in the early eighties and originally had a typical Westcoast rhythm group with piano, banjo, tuba and drums. Leader Gary Peterson changed all personnel in the late nineties and the versatile new players could switch instruments from banjo to guitar and from tuba to bass. This way all the bandmembers could stylewise express themselves in more different ways. Leader Gary Peterson piano, Bob Erwig trumpet, Phil Hatton clarinet, Rex Rice trombone, Dave Brown guitar, John Walling bass and Bill Franklin drums
