On Monday, Rebecca Hayes posted a photo to her Facebook page showing a scrap of paper with the handwritten message, “This parking is for Veterans, lady. Learn to read & have some respect.”
It had reportedly been left on her windshield while she was in the nearby grocery store.
Alongside the image, Hayes wrote an open letter to her accuser, admitting that she did, indeed, park in one of the designated veteran spaces.
After apologizing for her action, Hayes then tells the person, “I’m sorry that you can’t see my eight years of service in the United [States] Navy.”
She goes on to say, “I’m sorry that your narrow misogynistic world view can’t conceive of the fact that there are female Veterans.”
In an interview with WBTV, she points out that her husband, who served in the U.S. Army, has never gotten a negative reaction when he parked in one of the reserved spaces.
The Facebook message continues by calling out the absence of a face-to-face interaction and ends with the words, “...I served, did you?”
The comments on the page have been overwhelmingly positive, with many applauding her response and expressing gratitude for her service.
