Deep Sea Exploration Crew Spots Bubblegum Coral 1,700 Feet Below Surface

The crew of NOAA's Okeanos Explorer found an active bubblegum coral community deep within the ocean.

There isn’t typically a whole lot of greenery found deep in the ocean, but NOAA's Okeanos Explorer team recently released a video showing some clinging to an active Bubblegum Coral.
The green filaments are believed to be either sponges or algae that, while sinking from the surface, got caught up in the coral’s branches.
Either way, they add a dose of color not often seen roughly 1,700 feet below the surface.
That’s far from the only feature of note, as the coral is also hosting some other intriguing guests.
Wrapped around its center is a brittle star, and off to the side, a crab clutches onto one of the coral’s branches.
The video was taken as part of NOAA’s exploration of the Marianas.
